And especially with people in my age group (I'm 15) we don't think about how our actions affect others.
So, when I was younger, I played Diablo online (the first one), and I did some griefing when there were some hacks released - things like Town Portaling people directly into Diablo's lair (where they were subsequently be annihilated by him and all his minions in that small room), teleporting inside of the blacksmith and when they go to sell their stuff, blast them with a fireball or whatever, stuff like that. What RPGmaniac says here is pretty much the reason I did it. That, and, I was often with my friend at the time, and we'd both get a laugh. Honestly, we just didn't really consider any kind of empathy for others, especially those we don't know, and are entirely anonymous over the internet.

The older I got, the wiser I got, and the more I am able to understand the things I do can impact not just other people, but also how other people view me. It's a whole can of worms that most people, up to the ages of 18-21, just don't understand or fully grasp. Combine that with a general immaturity, and a whole Pandora's Box full of other mental and emotional states that torment the developing human mind during those ages, oh and group behavior if they often do these things only when friends are around (like me).

People are just jerks, that's pretty much all there is to it, for most anyways. I'm ADHD myself, I won't bully people and in general I won't make someone's game feel like hell, but when provoked I can get harsh. I make people ragequit when they're annoying at the point my group suffers because of it - I'll overaggro on purpose as a tank/puller, I'll stop healing the person if I'm monking, and I'll deny e. management when requested if I play necro. In 90% of the case, when the person leaves, everyone resumes normal gameplay and we finish what we were doing without any problem.

Yeah, I fight fire with fire. You're annoying? Betcha I'll be annoying too, and in your next group you probably won't do it again.

But in general I'm laid-back. I don't wanna ruin gaming experiences, I don't find it fun... got nothing to gain from it.

And yes, I agree... anonymity really doesn't help when it comes to idiocy. People think they can get out with everything because they can either leave group and forget about it, or ignore others. It doesn't matter to them, it's only a game". But to whoever tells that to me... keep in mind that when humans will play with other humans, there WILL BE FEELINGS, therefore conflicts.

Eh, greed is the source of all evil. Even if the evil is of a much, much lesser extent, it all amounts to greed. Whether it's making you feel good, or helping you make money, it's all about you.

When I ask my friends why sometimes they're enormous jerks online the response I usually get is "It's fun and they can't do anything to me in real life."

Why do people close the elavator when they see you running to it or why do people cut you off on a road?

selfishness

online they can do this with no reprecutions more or less, as in real life somone could do somthing about it.

That'd be too simple. Remove the notionf of "property" (*eyes pointing to the East*), then no greed, then no evil, then no problem!

There're more roots to these problems.

anonymity brings out the worse in human. but people fail to understand that at the end of the day, they have to answer to themselves, and not the other players whom they have wrong.

It is not something you can get away with, even thou its only a game, to the person who got cheated, they learn a valuable lesson that everywhere you are, there will be evil/mischiefs. But to the cheater, they have to live with the guilt forever, guilt that they've done something bad to another person who never did anything to them.

hope you sleep well at night

It also brings the best in humans: just think about all these guys that work hard via the net to do something "useful" (from the relatively useful as managing GWG or populating the GWiki, to the very useful like coordinating international charity organisations or relaying critical information around the world). All these guys are virtually "email addresses", and in real life no one knows about their fantastic work. Without net anonymity a lot of oppressed people (Chinese, to Tibetan, Iraqis, etc.) would not be able to express themselves.

Anonymity is a double-edged sword (+50hp / -5 energy )

Anonymity is great. it allows people to express themselves fully on the internet and just let out. Of course this leads to people either being great people or terrible people. If you're in the game you know you're anonymous so you'll do whatever you want and usually things you can't do in the real world. For some this can be having tons of fun meeting people from all over and playing in a fantasy world and for others the anonymity makes them feel as if they can easily scam people, laugh at them and make themselves feel superior without anything happening to them. They feel immortal and use it for evil deeds. That is really the number one thing. We don't know who they are, they know no one knows, and so they feel above the "law".

Eh... evil actually comes from a different place IMO. People can be good with a little help.

/just watched Narnia with my daughter and got to explain the underlying message there
